Veri*factu guide in English

Verifactu in Spain, explained in English

Veri*factu is how the Spanish tax agency (AEAT) makes sure that invoices issued from software cannot be altered afterwards. This page sums up what it is, whom it applies to and from when, and what you will notice in your day-to-day invoicing.

What Veri*factu is

Veri*factu is the verifiable invoicing scheme of the AEAT. Every invoice issued from an invoicing program gets a QR code printed on it and a hash, a cryptographic fingerprint computed from the invoice and from the previous invoice's hash. Change an old invoice and every fingerprint after it changes too, so tampering shows.

The rules are in Real Decreto 1007/2023, the technical details in Orden HAC/1177/2024. The original timetable was postponed twice, by Real Decreto 254/2025 and then by Real Decreto-ley 15/2025 of 2 December (BOE 3 December 2025), which sets the dates below.

Deadlines: who and from when

WhoMandatory from
Companies paying corporate income tax (S.L., S.A. and similar)1 January 2027
Everyone else: autónomos (estimación directa and módulos), comunidades de bienes and other individuals with a business activity1 July 2027

Note. Businesses under the SII (immediate VAT reporting for large companies) and the regional tax systems of the Basque Country and Navarre follow their own rules. This page is information, not tax advice: which case is yours, your gestor decides with you.

What your software has to do

Under RD 1007/2023, a compliant invoicing program has to:

  • print a QR code in the AEAT format on every invoice;
  • compute and keep a SHA-256 hash that chains each invoice to the previous one;
  • keep an unalterable record of every invoice issued, and let you look at it at any time;
  • in Veri*factu mode, send each invoice record to the AEAT and print the line «Factura verificable en la sede electrónica de la AEAT»;
  • never delete or rewrite an issued invoice: corrections are made with a corrective invoice (factura rectificativa);
  • come with a Declaración Responsable from its maker stating that it meets the rules.

contix does all of this from the first invoice, at no extra cost, and its Declaración Responsable (in Spanish) is published.

What changes day to day

  1. An issued invoice cannot be deleted. You correct it with a corrective invoice; the program records which one corrects which.
  2. Numbers run without gaps. Each series is consecutive, and cancellations leave a trace.
  3. Every invoice has a QR code. Your customer can scan it and check on the AEAT's website that the invoice exists.

Questions

Does Veri*factu apply to me as a foreigner?

It follows your tax registration in Spain, not your nationality. If you invoice as an autónomo or through a Spanish company with an invoicing program, that program has to meet Veri*factu from your date.

Can I keep using Word, Excel or a template?

Veri*factu regulates invoicing software. Whether your current way of invoicing counts as such, and what follows from it, is a question for your gestor.

Is contix in English?

The app is, completely, and it has a glossary of the Spanish terms. The invoices themselves are issued in Spanish. More about contix in English →
